Plant Pack®  – the sustainable packaging solution

Plant Pack® is a new and sustainable packaging material that is made 100 % from bio-based raw materials. It has similar shock-absorbing and heat-insulating characteristics to those of expanded polystyrene and can thus serve as a sustainable substitute for product packaging and transport protection, e.g. for household appliances or furniture, as well as to protect temperature-sensitive goods like food or pharmaceutical products.

And how is this sustainable packaging made? It’s quite simple: Plant Pack® is made from the plant-based residual product maize grits, which is generated in large quantities when corn is processed and which is not suitable to be used any further for food production. We use this raw material and “puff” it with the help of a process that is already established practice in cereal production, for example. After adding a natural binding agent, customised mouldings can be made from it – depending on their purpose, these can be adapted perfectly to the respective packaged good and thereby offer it optimal protection.

This still leaves the question of disposal. This is not at all complicated, either. Plant Pack® is biodegradable and decomposes within a short time after it has been used. The sustainable packaging can be discarded as a whole in a bin for organic waste or as compost (at home). It only releases the amount of CO2 that the corn plant has stored during its growth. The CO2 footprint overall shows significant advantages as compared to polystyrene: over its entire lifecycle, Plant Pack® causes 51 % less CO2 output. This makes Plant Pack® an environmentally friendly and sustainable packaging solution that can be used for an array of purposes.

Lifecycle

Packaging is often used only once before discarded again. This is why it is so important that the materials show a good environmental balance. Plant Pack® is sustainable from start to finish. It is made of special maize grits, a plant-based residual product that is generated in large quantities when corn is processed and is not suitable to be used any further for food production. With the help of a tried and tested process, the maize grits are puffed, thereby changing their structure. After adding a natural binding agent, customised mouldings can be made from it.

Corn as a raw material

The raw material used for Plant Pack® comes originally from the corn plant.

When processing corn – for example to make cereals – a residual product incurs that is not suitable to be used further for food production: maize grits.

It is this residue that we use – with the help of a tried and tested process, the maize grits are puffed, and their structure thereby changes.

After adding a natural binding agent, made-to-measure mouldings can be produced from the material.

Use

Plant Pack® can be used in an array of ways: as transport protection for electronic devices or furniture, as an inlay for product packaging as well as for shipping or delivery packaging for temperature-sensitive goods such as food or pharmaceutical products.

Composting

After being used, Plant Pack® decomposes after a short while. It only releases the amount of CO2 that the corn plant has stored during its growth in the process. An alternative is the equally environmentally friendly disposal via a bin specifically for organic waste.
